February Feature Artist :: Gracie Morton Pwerle

Artist: Gracie Morton Pwerle
Born: c. 1956
Area: Utopia
Language: Alyawarreye

Gracie Morton Pwerle was born around 1956 at the Utopia Station, approximately 250km north east of Alice Springs. Gracie’s family members include other notable artists Gloria, Kathleen, Myrtle, Violet and Ada Bird Petyarre. Gracie started painting with the Batik movement in the 1970s before moving to canvas in the late 1980s. The transition to canvas allowed for the progressive development in Gracie’s skills as a painter.

Much of Gracie's work depicts Arnwekety (Bush Plum), a dreaming passed down to her by her father and aunt. The sweet tasting Bush Plum is an important food source for the Alyawarre and Anmatyerr women from Utopia. Gracie uses traditional dotting and lines in her work and beautiful colour variation to represent the seasonal changes of the plant.

Gracie’s work has been included in group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas, particularly in Western Europe, since the 1990s. Her works are held in many private and public collections including the Holmes a Court Collection in WA, and Slaughter and May International Law in London.
